Item details

The Eastman Plate Camera No. 5, series D was Kodak's most advanced and expensive plate camera designed for amateur use. Only 500 were made in 1902/03. Original retail price: $97.

The camera's feature set includes: 5 x 7 format; triple extension bellows (21" from lens to viewer, when fully extended); mahogany, leather and nickeled aluminum construction; front and back lenses; spring-actuated reversible back; folding ground glass shade; tripod socket; spirit level; Rapid Rectilinear Lens with 8.5 focus, f.8 speed; Bausch and Lomb automatic shutter; and storage space for 6 plates.

Due to its age and rarity, the camera has not been tested, other than opening the case, expanding the bellows, and actuating the shutter, but it appears to be in an excellent state of preservation for its age. The exterior of case is missing its leather handle and shows signs of light wear.

The 1902 print ad describing the camera is NOT included and is reproduced here only for contextual and informational purposes.

Differentiating between Similar Kodak Models:

1. Although the names are similar, the Eastman Folding Camera No. 5 and the Kodak Glass Plate Folding Camera No. 5 are not the same model as the Eastman Plate Camera No. 5. Those models were produced in much greater numbers and had fewer features.
2. The Eastman Plate Camera No. 4 was released at the same time as No. 5. No. 4 was the lower-priced model, uses smaller 4x5 plates and is constructed with more common materials than No. 5. Four times as many No. 4s were made, making it much less rare than the deluxe No. 5.

FAQs

We strive to make our descriptions, photos and posted shop policies accurate and informative so *the buyer can make an informed decision prior to purchase.* As that information was made available, and because cancellations generate unproductive work time for us, which keeps us from sourcing and researching new objects to offer our buyers, we will not cancel orders (extreme circumstances excepted), and will only accept returns or issue refunds for items that the buyer received, but found to be defective or damaged.

Most of the items we list are unique finds that cannot be restocked easily or in a timely manner. If a listed item is marked “sold out,” it is unlikely that it will be restocked soon.

The items offered through our Etsy shop are a small percentage of our inventory. If you are looking for an item similar to one we have listed, feel free to send us an inquiry convo.
