Math & Science Series: Cantor Set Fractal Quilt Pattern - Beginner/Fast & Easy Quilt
A fractal is a way of seeing infinity. - Benoit Mandelbrot
While I do have a science background, I do not understand all the math that lies behind fractals and other math constructions, but enjoy the geometric surprises and the fun and challenge of making them into quilts. I hope you enjoy them too.
The cantor set is a type of fractal. The cantor ternary set depicted in this quilt is built by removing the middle third of a line set as you progress down the quilt. This quilt has an added dimension of mass (or area) distribution where the mass from the previous line is split with one third to the left and two thirds to the right providing the asymmetric look to the quilt.
This is a fun and easy to make modern quilt pattern. It will make a great looking wall hanging or table topper for your favorite math enthusiast or just for those that like abstract or modern quilts. Changing up the fabrics in the quilt pattern can give this a very different look to match the style of the receiver. This is a beginner quilt pattern or fast and easy for the more experienced quilter. While shown in 2 colors, alternate color combination choices are also fun to work with from your scraps of fabric.
Dimensions of the finished quilt: 27 ½ x 18 ½ or alternate 27 ½ x 37 ½ inches.
This 12 page pattern provides directions for both non-directional and directional contrast fabric cutting to ensure your quilt comes out perfect. Cutting instructions show the best way to cut from your fabric with the least waste. The last page provides a template to color your own quilt before picking your fabrics.
The first quilt made from this pattern is also available for purchase on Etsy at this link: https://www.etsystudio.com/listing/496615491 It features a stunning black and gold swirl fabric as the background and black solid as the contrast. (see last picture in this listing)
