Item details

Medieval style bead support spindle, pink & amber translucent handmade lampwork glass lace or light weight wool spinning tool, whorls with handmade wooden spindle stick for support spinning. Whorls have a mildly tapered hole. These whorls and sticks are based on historic whorl finds with modern twist. This pairing is made with an interesting translucent glass that transmits the colors it contains. Choose the option that suits you best- spindle stick with one whorl or two, or just the whorls by themselves.

If you already have a spindle stick, please read specs below carefully to determine whether it is likely to fit. Whorls will come the stick pictured or a similar spindle stick. I have lost track of the type of wood in the pictured spindle~ it is either red oak or hickory.

This is an interesting pairing which spins well. To find the 'sweet spot', put on the larger whorl and adjust it, then add the smaller whorl and adjust it. Think of the options~ two whorls, just the larger whorl, just the smaller whorl~ change things around as the weight of your newly spun yarn changes! O-rings to help keep whorls in place are provided.

This Medieval inspired spindle is bottom-weighted and best for spinning lace weight or light weight yarn. It is a light weight two part spindle~ removable glass whorls make it easy to transport. See below for more information about using this hand spinning tool. Removable whorls can be moved around the spindle stick and adjusted to find the spinning 'sweet spot.' Please be sure the whorls are on right side up~ holes are mildly tapered to fit stick.

Small Whorl weight~ 15g; 1 in. diameter and 3/4 in. tall, hole is about 3/16 inch at largest end.
Large Whorl weight~ 21 g; 1 1/4 in. diameter, 7/8 in. tall, hole is about 1/4 inch at largest end
Stick with both whorls~ 41 g; with small whorl alone~ 22g; with large whorl alone~ 27g
Length of spindle stick~ About 10 in; stick protrudes about 1 3/8 in. below large whorl, 5/16 in. below small whorl. The spindle stick in this listing is made by this shop:

About these whorls~ Each can be used alone for lightweight spinning, together and separately as your cop gains weight. See specs above. If buying small whorl alone, please check where your current whorl rides on your tapered stick to determine if this is likely to fit beneath it. The small whorl will fit below most whorls on spindles here:

OOAK- Each glass whorl is individually handmade and one of a kind. Even I could never make another one exactly like it.

SRA #A39 (self-representing artist) art glass from Isinglass Design; all of my beads are handmade lampwork (flamework) glass made by me, properly kiln annealed and well cleaned. The glass used in this whorl is the same as that used to make glass beads in Italy (Murano).
