Vintage Waterbury Colombia Coat of Arms Brass Buttons, Circa 1980’s

Rescued from a vintage military style ladies jacket.

Rare and unusual.

This is Waterbury’s pattern number 15938, and is called “Columbian Army Shield.” You can see these buttons on Waterbury’s website.

The large buttons are marked with Waterbury’s 4 W’s on back. The small buttons are marked "Waterbury Button CT USA" on back.

The buttons are in excellent condition.

The design is the Coat of Arms of the country of Colombia, South America.

This set consists of ten large buttons (a smidge over 3/4 inches) and eight cuff buttons (5/8 inches). Enough for a double breasted blazer or perhaps two blazers.

About the Coat of Arms, extracted from wikipedia:
The coat of arms of Colombia contains a shield with numerous symbols. Perched on top of the shield is an Andean condor holding an olive crown; the condor symbolizes freedom. The national motto, Libertad y Orden (Spanish for Liberty and Order), is on a scroll in between the bird and the shield. The condor is depicted as displayed (with his wings extended) and looking to the right. Pierced per fess Azure, Argent and Azure, in centre chief a Pomegranate between in sinister chief a Cornucopia overflowing with coins and in dexter chief a cornucopia overflowing with fruits and vegetables proper, in center point a Phrygian cap Gules held on a Lance proper, in base the Isthmus of Panama Vert fesswise between two Ships Sable, sailed Argent.

About Watebury:
Founded in 1812 during wartime, The Waterbury Button Company has been making stamped metal buttons for nearly 200 years. They have amassed approximately 40,000 different button dies, each a work of art. At times, innovative owners, responding to breakthroughs in materials technology, steered the company into other lucrative endeavors, from as vinyl records to bomb fuses.
