Item details

These cobalt glass beads are Dutch and were made in Holland between 1500-1800AD. They were made by winding molten glass on a hot mandrel until the desired size was achieved. They were then traded into Africa, specifically with the Dogon tribe in Mali. Because of this they are often called "Dogon glass" despite the fact they were produced elsewhere. This particular shape is known by traders as "Dogan donuts" due to their large holes and ring shape.

Pitting varies from bead to bead, some have more surface blemishes than others. However, some pitting was intentional and was added as a decorative element to the bead.

The beads range from 5mm to 8mm hole to hole and 12mm to 15mm in width. They have exceptionally large holes, approximately 6mm-8mm.

Total length of strand is approx 12.5 inches.

You will receive the exact beads you see pictured here. They are temporarily strung and meant to be used in your own jewelry creations.

These glass beads are indeed antique pieces and their condition reflects that. Worn edges and weathering are a product of time and use...not defects.
