Vintage French Pure Hemp Reclaimed Fabric Piece, Tablecloth Circa 1900
I am fairly certain that the original use for this large piece of pure hemp fabric was as a table runner or a tablecloth. I suspect the fabric was woven at home to fill a specific need, it is too narrow and with a stripe each end was not likely to have been mass produced.
It is large measuring approx 39 inches wide by 186 inches long.
Thick fabric with a weight of approx 4.72 Kg so very thick and heavy hence the postage cost.
Condition, very good has few rust spots and marks and some tiny pin head size holes, such as shown in the last picture , generally its as good as genuine antique hemp comes.
It has been used and washed but as with all pure hemp it sheds fluff when washed. The presence of fluff on this piece indicates it has not had much use as after several washes this stops. Therefore it is advisable to wash it separately from other washing.
Thick fabric which will soften with repeat washes. Colour is difficult to describe but I would say its creamy white.
Muted pink - red stripe at the top and bottom. Hemmed top and bottom by hand.
Selvage side edges.
Would make a whole lot of hemp dishcloths, or it would upholster small items perfectly.
