Item details

Be the first to have a metal hat that doubles as a pin keep. This one of a kind beauty is unique and a bit crude at the same time. The reproduction coverlet fabric is a complimentary contrast, seemingly from the same era.

The hat has been weighted down with aquarium tiny stones. The type of metal is unknown - though it looks like pewter.

The coverlet fabric is cranberry and tan (circa 2007).

The base measures 1 3/4" x 2"

The hat brim measures 2 3/4" x 2 1/2"

The pin keep stands 2 3/4" tall

While making this, my mind kept wandering. Who made this hat? How old is it?

And so, I came to the conclusion (my fictional story) that it was made by a young boy. His grandpa was a blacksmith who liked to tinker with other projects. Soon it would be Christmas and the young boy wanted desperately to make his mum something special.

This was grandpa's opportunity to teach his young apprentice some skills of the trade and working with metal.

When he asked his grandson what he had in mind, there was no hesitation.

Mum loves Abe Lincoln, I want to make a hat, just like the one he wore. And so the lessons began.

On Christmas morning he was so excited to see mum open her gift.

Tears rolled down her cheek, "you made this for me."

After many hugs mum took her son over to her rocking chair. This is where she sat to do her needlework. Across from where she sat was the fireplace. The mantle above was very simple, some books and a picture of Abe Lincoln.

"I will put this treasure you've made me beside the picture. Everyday when I sit in my chair I will see the love and hard work you poured into making me such a fine gift."

Where will you place this one of a kind treasure? What story will it hold for you to share?
