These marvelous good quality two hole sew-through plastic buttons were made in Germany in the 1930's. These casein or galalith buttons are in wonderful condition!! They are unused and clean, and are ready for your sewing and creative projects. Some of the photo show only 9 buttons but You will recieve 12 buttons like the ones shown in the photos. The buttons are darker in shade then the photos show, more ivory then white. Some are more ivory in shade then the pure off-white, nicely aged by time and storage, so please allow for some differences in color / shade.
These wonderful quality and very pretty Art Deco ivory buttons have a wonderful smooth feel to them, and the casein plastic still retains a wonderul gloss even after 80 years. Trully wonderful vintage plastic buttons from an era when quality was made!
They measure... 1-1/2 inch in diameter, or 38 mm in diameter
Casein was an early plastic made from milk protein invented in Germany in 1900, and was first introduced at the Paris Universal Exhibition in the year 1900. Casein plastic could not be moulded like Bakelite, but had to be cut or carved from rods or sheets. It was beautifully glossy and could be polished to a long-lasting silky lustre. It was used for jewelry, but was also laminated in layers to form cameos, to make fountain pen cases, knitting needles, and especially for buckles and buttons.
