PDF: FOUR BABIES' KNITTED BONNETS AND BERETS, FOR NEWBORN BABIES, HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE 13 TO 15 INCHES

Please note this item is for a downloadable file and not for the completed items.

These delightful designs were discovered in Woolcraft of 1947, but the designs are almost certainly much older. The yarn specified is 3-ply Beehive, which equates to a modern 4-ply. Three of the designs specify the yarn used double; and for these I suggest you may like to substitute a modern DK double knitting (light worsted) yarn - the original definition of a double-knitting yarn was that it was twice the thickness of 3ply.

The patterns suggest one or two ounces of yarn, which is 25g. or 50g. respectively, an ideal project for that odd ball or skein.

The original writing style has been retained, including some of the ‘wordy’ descriptions of stitches and techniques.

Pressing: these patterns were written when most yarns were either cotton or wool and hot steam pressing was usual. Please check your ball-band instructions for recommended method. Tension: if, using recommended needles, more sts to the inch are obtained, needles a size coarser should be tried; if less, then use a size finer.

To knit these designs you need Old UK no. 8 needles which are US size 6, metric 4 mm; and UK no. 9 which are US 5, 3.75 mm.
All measurements are in inches and 1 inch equates to 2.5 cm.

The Pixie Hood can be made ‘deeper’ by casting on an extra 8 stitches, for those babies with 'longer' heads.

The Bonnet specifies ribbon rosettes which were a very common feature of home-made baby-wear at that time. To make ribbon rosettes, cut a length of ribbon about four times its width, join ends, and gather up one edge. These were then sewn on to cover the end of the ribbon ties and add interest.

These designs give a quick method of creating a very welcome and much appreciated gift for a Baby Shower!

These patterns are part of a project to digitalise my extensive library of vintage knitting, crochet and sewing publications. Please share them with me!
