This silver-grey fleece is from Toby, our stud male alpaca and father to Bonnie and Loretta (check out their cria fleeces in my other listings). The photos do a fairly good job of showing the silver color, but it is a bit darker than most of the photos, and washes to a striking silver - this is the yarn I used for the Viking helmets in my "Custom Knitting" photo, and it is the perfect shade for metal. It isn't a flat grey in color, but is a base of ash color with black strands throughout. This makes it dye beautifully - see the picture of a bar of felted soap dyed turquoise and note the variation in color.
Toby has my longest fleece, about 4-5", pretty much across the whole of it. Often fleeces taper towards the edges or just vary in length across the whole coat but his is very uniform. As a hand spinner myself, I really like the texture of his fleece - while not the finest or softest fiber I have, it has a loose crimp but is still very fluffy, and holds together well - it cards and drafts nicely because of this, and one of these days I'm going to spin some laceweight yarn with his fleece, the length would really facilitate an extremely fine yarn! This fleece total weight is 3 lbs. This is not skirted fleece, but I will go over ounce orders for second cuts, and there really is almost no VM. The pound and whole fleece amounts are discounted slightly to allow for being unskirted, but as I said, they have very little VM to remove. Our shearer has commented that he's never sheared such clean fleeces, and can often cut all 12 animals on one blade rather than changing after 3-5 like most farms. We move our animals almost every day for all but the coldest part of the year, so they are always on grassy, healthy pasture. This means they don't have nearly the access to mud and dirt that most barn-kept alpacas do, so while there are some hay and pine needle VM, there's very little actual dirt. I personally never wash my fleece until I actually have yarn!
If you'd like a sample of Toby's fleece, just send me a message and I'll send you a little. For that matter, I can send samples of anyone you see listed, and I usually have a number of fleeces I’ve not gotten a chance to list on here so just ask, if I’m sending a sample I might as well send several :)
My pricing gives a 10% discount going from an ounce to a full pound, a 15% discount going to a full skirted fleece, and a 30% discount by buying a full unskirted fleece.
I have the shipping set for a large flat rate box to cover any larger orders. If the shipping is less for your order I will refund the difference.
I generally ship USPS - being rural that is the most convenient - but can ship UPS when appropriate. I ship items as soon as possible - if already made then within 1-3 days usually, and if custom-made then within 2-3 weeks. If the actual shipping cost is more than $1 or so less than my listed shipping costs then I will refund the difference.
