This gorgeous huipil was handwoven on a back strap loom. It is the style used in Xela, Guatemala. It is a wonderful example of the traditional design found in Xela. This one is done in multi-colors that revolve around pink. The huipil measures 34 inches wide by 62 inches long. The design is 38 inches long. The sides have not been sewn and the neckline has not been cut. This huipil is new. It would be great to be worn, or cut up to incorporate into your own designs.
A huipil is a Mayan blouse. Women weave the blouses by hand. Traditionally, each village or town has had its own design. That is not to say that everyone is exactly alike, however. Each woman adds something of her personality or story to each one. The last picture is of a Mayan woman from Chichicastenango and her daughters. They are weaving the traditional Mayan huipil.

All the fabrics on this site are 100% cotton hand-dyed and hand-woven in Guatemala. The regular fabric is 36 inches wide. The fabric is not cut until you buy it. When you order multiple yards, you'll receive your fabric in a continuous piece.
Since these fabrics are hand woven there might be slight imperfections. These are characteristics that make the fabric stand out from machine made fabrics.
The corte pieces are different widths. The width of each one is in the description.
Fabrics should be prewashed before sewing with them. Edges of the fabric should be zigzagged to prevent fraying. Fabrics should be washed with the fixative, Retayne, to fix the color. Please follow the instructions on the bottle of Retayne. Remove fabric from the machine right after the final spin cycle. Dry in the dryer until damp dry using the coolest temperature. Fabric should then be hung up to finish drying.
Retayne can be ordered on-line from any number of sites such as Joanne’s or Amazon.
