This is a vintage Bailey No. 4 1/2 wide-bodied smoothing / bench plane in good condition. Featuring a hardwood tote and knob. Tastefully restored and ready to go back to work. Ships to UK/USA/CAN/Europe.
The No. 4 1/2 smoothing plane is a bit wider, longer, & heavier than the popular No. 4. It is often preferred by some woodworkers as it has more weight and a wider blade.
I believe this one dates from the 1930's as the word 'Stanley' is not present on the old-style lever cap.
WOODEN TOTE & KNOB This Bailey smoothing plane has a wooden knob (front) and a wooden tote (rear). Both are made from beechwood.
I have carefully removed the old finish to retain the patina laid down by decades of woodworking use and then treated with hard wax oil and paste wax for a silky smooth finish. The tote has had a break sometime in its past, however I have repaired it correctly and it is hardly noticeable. It's part of the tool's history - I mention it in this description for completeness.
RAZOR-SHARP CUTTING BLADE The plane is rust-free and all metal surfaces have been cleaned and oiled. The cutting blade has a 25 degree cutting bevel and has been honed on a diamond stone (300 & 1000 grit) and then stropped for a mirror-finished and razor-sharp cutting edge.
READY FOR USE AGAIN Restoring old hand-tools, particularly bench planes, is something of a passion for me. This particular Stanley Bailey No.4 1/2 came to me requiring some restoration. Having been through my process, the plane is now ready for work once again.
Will you be the one to put it to good use...?
Please carefully review all photos and read the full description before committing to your purchase.
