The Belgian Coticule is a workhorse whetstone that's been around for centuries; they were known to have been used for sharpening weapons during the Roman Empire. The abrasive material in these natural sharpening stones is garnet - spessartine garnets. The tiny garnet crystals perform a unique cutting action that many find to be idyllic for sharpening straight razors.
Coti edges are not like Jnat edges or Thuri Edges, they are their 'own thing'. I shave off Coticules regularly. I also use them to do the mid-range work quite often. The reason for that is they're fast and easy; I can go from post bevel-set to prefinish so fast it's not funny. And - I don't lose any of the 'Zen' like you do with synthetic options. Yep - honing on a Coticule has a ton of Zen in it.
This particular Coti is very special - it's a natural combination stone and it's a monster. The length is not a perfect 8 inches, more like 7.9". The width is stellar at 3.0" almost on the nose. And the thickness is just about 1" all around. The seperation line between BBW and yellow Coticule is not all that crisp, but I'd say the Coti layer measures, on average, about 10 mm in depth all around. This baby here, is enough stone for many generations of honing bliss; it is most definitely what I'd call an heirloom Coticule for sure.
The Coti layer is, I believe, Les Petas. It's a little hard but not glassy. It is not a fast stone on slurry or water. I do not sense any autoslurrying and I found it easy to finish on. I lapped this one but I did not give it a full and perfect lapping - so I would suggest lapping it again when you get it. Overall, I'd say the speed was slow to medium on slurry and slow on water only. I finished on trace slurry 99% of the time with this one and my edges were heaven-sent smooth and sharper than expected actually.
NOTE - do not expect that just waving a blade over this stone is going to bring you a 5-star edge. Trial, error, practice, failure -- aka, learning, is a necessity. Honing is a skill, not a recipe. Expect to be challenged, expect that you must invest time and effort in learning how to use this stone to its true potential. If you're not prepared for that - then please do not buy this stone.
A slurry stone is included with the purchase however, it will not be a natural combo slurry stone.
