Welcome to The GYPSY MADONNA Collection! May I offer.....

AGE: C.1950/1960 - a vintage piece that needed a little TLC

ITEM: From a recent treasure trove of retro modern ribbon finds, here's a single ribbon work floral - American made - that might have adorned any number of items made during the 50s/60s. The floral is entirely hand made and needed only a few stitches to get it back together. The floral is baby pink and periwinkle with a white center. A bit of rat tail cord dips from t he bottom.

CONDITION: Very nice for it's age. The fabric to the flowers is ultra soft - much like the satin items that were made way back when. The cording is a replacement for the original that had come undone and I had to add a bit of crinoline ot hide some stitches that were unraveling.

SIZE: 2-5/16" x 1-1/16" (width of flower only).

FINAL COMMENTS: Projects? Well, a dolls hat, a pair of gloves, trim on a dress, a lingerie floral, a box embellishment...... you are only limited by your imagination.

The last 2 photos show other designs as well as ways of decorating with the roses!

A Little History about Ribbonwork.....

Due to popular demand, I am once again going to be listing ribbon flowers that I have found during my travels. And for those that are not familiar with the craft, here's a little history.

Almost always made in France, the very oldest ribbon flowers date to the time of Marie Antoinette! The court of the late Queen wore magnificent dresses embroidered with the finest of materials and the most elaborate of designs.

The next era of popularity was between the late 1800s and the early 1930s. Ribbon flowers again would have been made in France and could be found on ornate ball gowns (think House of Worth) as well as wedding gowns, flapper dresses, hats, dainty items for the boudoir, picture frames and MORE! In France, you could walk into a hat salon and purchase the florals individually to add to your favorite chapeau. In the United States, you could buy single flowers from France at the Five and Dime on little bits of cardboard for 5 cents! Items purchased on the cards could be attached to anything the little lady desired!

The United States had their heyday with ribbon flowers in the 1950s. You could find the florals on lingerie and souvenir items, but by this time, the florals were very small and were usually only a single floral. The simplicity of the design meant that the flower could be made quickly and inexpensively.

The next era of resurgence was in the late 1980s/early 1990s when silk ribbon embroidery hit the shores of the US. Women in Australia were putting together the most exquisite designs and American women wanted to learn.

There you have it - a brief history of ribbon flowers. Of course you can search the net for more info and get an idea of the designs made in the old days. Some are simply spectacular!

I ship as soon as I can, usually 1-2 days within the purchase date. Sometimes there are delays but not many - usually family and the weather are the main culprits.

Payments

Payment methods accepted: Paypal (of course), cheques/checks, money orders and yes, I can do layaway. Just ask about my terms.

Returns & exchanges
I gladly accept returns and exchanges
Contact me within: 3 days of delivery
Ship items back within: 7 days of delivery
I don't accept cancellations
But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.
The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
Conditions of return
Buyers are responsible for return shipping costs. If the item is not returned in its original condition, the buyer is responsible for any loss in value.
Additional return information
Not happy? Just doesn't work for you? Just send it back and I will offer a full refund on the purchase price only. Layaway pieces are handled a little differently - usually I apply a 15% restocking fee if the item has been "on hold" for a very long time. Most dealers do "no refunds" on either the deposits or layaway itself. I think this a little harsh as you never know what is going to crop up in the way of an emergency and sometimes a person does have to hold onto their money due to such a situation.

Additional policies

Right now, I don't really accept custom orders but if you e-mail me, and I have the time, I might just be able to accommodate your request!
