Beautiful vintage komon silk from an unused kimono bolt sold by the yard. Orange grass/leaf batik style silk fabric with yellow and cream. Batik style pattern that is stencil dyed and a brocade 3D pattern of raised weave to accent the leaf/grass pattern . This fabric has a wonderful drape to it and is very soft. It is in very good vintage condition (may have tiny flaws due to age but overall excellent condition) . The fabric and the print has a gorgeous flow to it and will turn any project into a work of art. I love both sides of this fabric and the difference is subtle but it is shown in the two photos of the long bolt images.
Komon is a kimono with repeating patterns all over the fabric. Although the literal meaning of komon is "small prints", these patterns aren't necessarily small, just repeated
Katazome or stencil dyeing is a dyeing method that uses a stencil to create repeated patterns, either using dye paste or a resist paste. The stencil is usually made of a stiff type of paper infused with persimmon juice, and is washed and reused until it falls apart. Edo Komon and Kata Yuzen are types of Katazome stencil dyeing methods. With combinations of stencil, brush and resist techniques, the dye craftsmen created fabric that is its own art form.
