At one point during the 60s, it was all the rage to have a raccoon collar on your sweater or cloth coat. This natural (not dyed) raccoon fur collar dates from that time, although the sweater or coat that it was attached to didn't make it to this sale. The collar is shown in the pictures draped on a relatively new Lands End sweater, and the sweater is not for sale!
This raccoon collar is in good shape for its age. The guard hairs are long and silky (as they should be) and the undercoat is soft and dense, with no bald or worn-thin spots. The piece is flexible, not dried out with age. There is a cotton backing with an overlay of burnt orange taffeta covering most of the backing. There are still some threads present that had originally attached the collar to a sweater or coat. At its widest point the backing measures about 3.5" across, but if the fur is taken into account, it is about 6" wide. The piece is approximately 31" long from end to end.
