This yarn bowl is a one-of-a-kind handmade piece. It provides plenty of room to hold yarn and keep everything organized, safely away from cats and dust bunnies! It has a double notch, great for feeding out two balls of yarn when you need to. The pretty pierced holes are functional as well as decorative, providing places to stow needles when not in use. The broad foot keeps the piece stable while you’re working.
I formed the bowl on the potter's wheel using stoneware clay, and then cut the notches and graduated holes when it was leather hard. After the first firing, I used a wash of underglaze to create a turquoise spiral on the interior. Then, with the wheel turning slowly, I coated the outside with turquoise. Inspired by the flecks of color in hand-dyed yarn, I added small markings in green, yellow, orange and purple to finish. Once all these colors dried, I dipped the piece in a low gloss clear glaze. The final firing produced a finish that is smooth to the touch, easy to clean, and very durable. The rims and foot show off the ivory colored speckled clay, and the colors have a soft sheen.
All rims and edges are smoothed and rounded to keep yarn from fraying and to prevent chipping. The bowl is 7 1/2 inches in diameter, 3 1/2 inches deep, and the foot is 4 ½ inches across. Volume: about 1 1/4 U.S. quarts (1.25 liters).
