Medium size & weight top whorl drop spindle in Birds-eye Maple and Dymondwood
This listing is for one of two near-identical spindles made from the same billet of timber, by Jory Freyee and Malcolm Fielding, in the workshops of The Spindleshop, Queensland, Australia.
The spindle shaft of this heirloom quality item is made in Dymondwood for long life and wobble free performance. The whorl is made from a lovely piece of Birds-eye Maple from the US. It's a lovely wood that takes a really smooth finish and is very even in density.
The spindle has a handmade stainless steel transverse hook terminal, that has been fine tuned for accurate centreing of the thread. There is a handmade stainless steel catch pin on the edge, that locates the thread to the back of the hook and gives a secure hold. Simply place the fibre by the catch pin and lead the thread into the hook (without winding around the centre of the spindle or hook - as shown in photo #5. It is very quick and easy to re-locate the thread for the next spin.
This spindle suits light to medium weight spinning or plying. The medium size shaft and generous whorl size mean this spindle takes a large cop.
The spindle is polished with a high shine French polish and a final gloss of carnauba wax adds durability.
This spindle has fast spin and my trademark perfect balance, having been tested on a balance jig and has brass puin weighting inserted in the edge of the whorl. Dimensions - whorl diameter approx 60 mm, (2.3 in), spindle length overall including hook - 265 mm, (10.5 in), weight about 43 grams (1.5 oz).
All my spindles are tested before despatch and come with a free sample of Corriedale roving from Tasmania. This item is in stock.

Returns & exchanges
Cancellations - please consider carefully when you order as I do not accept cancellation requests unless there are exceptional circumstances. An order cancellation involves quite a bit of time as the original order has to be removed from our database, after being entered and customer records created, refunds arranged and we have to correspond with Etsy about it. The goods involved are also then unavailable to buyers, for up to a week after we send a cancellation request to Etsy. In the event that we agree to a cancellation, we may then then make a cancellation charge of $10 US or 10% of the order value whichever is greater to cover our losses in administration time. In law in most countries a paid order is a contract between both parties, Etsy.com policy is that cancellations are at the sole discretion of the supplier.
I will replace goods at my cost (or refund item costs) that are found to be faulty in manufacture for up to six months from sale. Faulty items must normally be returned to me. Damage caused by inappropiate use or fair wear and tear is not covered by my warranty. The buyer is responsible for the cost of returning items to me, replacements will be shipped free of charge.
I can quote to repair items that have been damaged by the owner or accidentally. Please contact me for details.
Currently I am unable to take custom orders, sorry. You can ask for a copy of items that were previously sold by me on Etsy and sometimes (not always) I will be able to make the items and sell them as reserved items on Etsy. This business is based at Crystal Waters Ecovillage in Queensland Australia. I am unable to take personal callers at my premises or home. You can also find my products by a quick Google search for the Spindleshop.
