Antique Japanese boro textile dating back to Taisho / Meiji era. Early 1900s.
Natural indigo dye. Artisan made cotton.
Hand stitched in a peasant home. It was likely part of a futon cover or other household utilitarian textile.
Very large, it would make a great tablecloth or throw.
This is a highly collectible folk textile. An excellent example of Japanese utilitarian boro used around the home. In Japan, cotton was highly prized among the peasant class as a warmer alternative to hemp. Indigo dye was the best natural dye available to use with cotton. Indigo cotton became a quintessential Japanese fabric that was never thrown away and always reused. There term boro translates as scrap / rag. Therefore, this category of Japanese textile can simply be referred to as boro.
