Item details

Beautifull large tartanware crochet needle case or crochet hook case. The needle case was made by the Scottish Smith factory in the town of Mauchline, in Scotland.
It is made of wood covered with paper in the red and blue Cameron tartan and then lacquered. It is 7.6" (19,5 cm) long and 1.25" (3 cm) in diameter. The needle case is in great condition without visible wear on the tartan. A lovely item for any needlework lover, tartanware collector or other lover of Scotland !

In the East Ayrshire town of Mauchline in Scotland box makers turned snuff boxes in the local sycamore wood since the early 19th century. The craftsmen of the village developed their own style by adding pictures of local scenes, painted in oils or drawn in inks. When the demand for snuff boxes declined, they started making other small items of wood, a.o. needle cases and thimble holders. These items are known as Mauchline ware.
When Scotland became fashionable after the building of Balmoral by Queen Victoria and her commisioning two royal tartans ( ‘Victoria’ for the Queen and ‘Balmoral’ named for her new castle) around 1850, William and Andrew Smith, a father and son with a large factory in Mauchline, foresaw the rise in demand after Scottish tartan products. They designed a machine that could print tartan patterns on to paper which could then be applied directly on to boxes. In 1850 the Smiths published their ‘Authenticated Tartans of The Clans and Families of Scotland’. In 1851 they won a prize for their ‘Scotch Fancy Woodwork’ at The Great Exhibition. The products they made became known as ‘tartanware’. The production of tartan ware ceased in 1933 when fire destroyed the printing machinery.
