This spindle whorl was hand turned from a creamy white alabaster which has darker areas and striations. It is completely opaque. It has been polished with my mineral oil and beeswax paste polish
It is made to be used with a medieval-style spindle shaft, and is modeled with a large sized plain oak spindle stick. One can use this spindle as a supported spindle or a drop spindle if one used a half hitch knot.
The pictured whorl is not attached to the spindle in any way other than friction, although a clear hair tie or a bit of fiber wound about where the whorl should rest should prevent any slipping. I have not found this necessary with stone whorls.
I have found through experience that it may be desirable to be able to remove a whorl from the spindle as the shaft may break or otherwise wear, whereas the stone whorl will last. Also, the yarn wound on the shaft makes a convenient weaving shuttle and one would remove the whorl so it would not catch on the warp. It is recommended to use a spindle made of hardwood (red oak pictured) as softer woods will wear more quickly.
This listing is for a spindle whorl only, with an option to include a spindle stick at a discount.

I am happy to take custom orders, and if there is any piece which you wanted but missed out on, or would like in a different stone, I will do my best to accommodate your wishes.
I can also create pieces according to your specifications like weight, shape, e.g if you wanted a piece described in "Prehistoric Textiles" by EJW Barber p. 307, or if you perhaps tell me you would like a conical, flat topped 4 cm diameter and 2 cm deep whorl in, say, soapstone, I can work with that. In cases such as these, I will send photos as a piece progresses in case adjustments or changes are needed.
Please understand, though, that each item is individually made, so while I may attempt to replicate a whorl, there will be small differences here or there.
Custom pieces will take anywhere from a day to a week depending on complexity.
Ordering over the weekend: Orders placed over the weekend may experience some delay for two reasons. The first is due to USPS hours of operation, and the second is due to my work schedule at my other job. I apologize for any inconvenience this may incur.
I am able to rush orders if needed, so if you are under a time constraint, please let me know so that I can accommodate your needs.
***INTERNATIONAL ORDERS*** Please note that international buyers are responsible for any customs, VAT or handling charges that their purchase may incur.
