This is an antique iron mallet with wooden handle. Notice the ends are concave, designed to hold rolled-up rawhide plugs...........the plugs on this piece have dried up and have fallen out. This is a soft blow tool that was used for such things as driving wooden molds into leather or to punch holes with iron punches without "mushrooming" the punches, or any other pounding of things where hard metal contact is inappropriate.
The mallet measures 10 1/2 inches long. The head is 3 inches wide with a 2 1/4 diameter. The holes on the ends are 3/4 inches deep. There is some surface rust. There are a few use chips on end surfaces. There is a crack on the handle. There is some give that lets the metal move up and down on the handle.
This is a cool item for a collection of antique tools. It is very heavy; indeed I can only just pick it up. As with any tool, use caution when using. Tool display. Museum prop/display. Leather Tooling.
