Item details

This listing is for a PDF cross stitch chart only. It's fun and easy to stitch, no backstitch or fractionals. The model was stitched on 32ct Belfast linen, Vintage Stormy Night. Finished design size is approx 6in x 3in and stitch count is 97 x 49.

It's a celebration of Bonfire Night, the 5th November. In 1605 in England James 1 was on the throne, he had succeeded Elizabeth 1. Catholics thought that James 1 would be more tolerant of their religion. This did not happen and a group of young men decided violence was the answer. Under the leadership of Robert Catesby they decided to blow up the houses of parliament, killing the king and the members of parliament.
The conspirators got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder and stored them in the cellar under the House of Lords. One of the group became uneasy and warned his friend, Lord Monteagle, to stay away from Parliament on Nov 5th. Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellar with the 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was tortured and executed. On the night the Gunpowder plot was foiled bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the king. Since then November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night.
