Description: Offered are 186 Old Antique Mandrel Wound Glass Beads shown in photos. Unknown origin, but look to be 18th-19th Century? Probably the earliest beads of true glass were made by the winding method. Glass at a temperature high enough to make it workable, or "ductile", is laid down or wound around a steel wire or mandrel. I am not an expert on beads, these are quite possibly African Trade Beads, many being made in Europe, Overseas and Asia for trade with Africa, and many other places around the world. 173 Smaller strung beads: 24 blue 30 black 27 green 32 white 30 red 30 yellow (some look greenish because of the blackened area inside the bead from the mandrel) 13 Single larger beads: 6 white 6 black 1 yellow
Measurements: Please see photos, as there are several beads in varying sizes on these strands, temporarily strung on cotton string. Photos are enlarged for detail, and photo's next to a ruler, which is marked in inches for measurements.
Condition: These are in good condition for their age; wear, dirt, and occasional chips, pits, cracks and broken beads are typical of beads used in trade.
