One of the keys to having monarchs—for their survival now and in the future—is having lots of milkweed. Because of modern changes, such as suburbanization and Roundup-Ready crops, there's a lot less milkweed than there was in the past. This is a disaster for monarchs since monarch caterpillars can eat nothing but milkweed.
A hardy perennial with fragrant, terminal blossoms made up of tiny dusty-pink blossoms on hairy stems. This milkweed is found throughout the Great Plains. Common milkweed tolerates clay, sandy or rocky calcareous soils, occurring naturally along stream banks, ponds and lakes and waterways of prairies, forest margins and roadsides. This milkweed is also a favorite of butterflies, native bees and hummingbirds as well as deer resistant. The seeds are very easy to grow and do well when planted in the fall or when cold-treated for three month prior to planting.
The seed is measured at 1/4 teaspoon per seed packet.
