Item details

The Black Forest Smock is a traditional overgarment. It was worn by craftsmen to protect their clothing while they were working. Originating in Germany, Switzerland, and France, locals call it a Kittel. Today, you can make it to wear as a mid-calf length dress or an over-shirt. The garment is comfy, yet allows you to move without excess fabric getting in your way.

Soft pleats fall from a wide neckband. Sleeves connect to side panels with gussets and are pleated at the wrists into buttoned cuff bands. Shoulder yokes, pocket welts, neckband, and cuffs were often decorated with chain-stitching (design and instructions are included inside pattern).

Most smocks are a one size fits all. This one fits Misses' 6-16; Men's 36-44. There are three sets of cutting lines, Average Men's size, Average Women's size and Slender Woman's size. There are also markings for making the shirt version instead of the dress.

To make a matching version for children, there is a different pattern available, FW #110 Little Kittel. Convo me if you don't see it in stock.

Suggested Fabrics: Soft or crisp fabrics such as linen, homespun, broadcloth, gingham, denim, featherweight corduroy, or lightweight wool.

Folkwear has been in business for a long time and is still in business today. Ursula's Alcove is a licensed dealer. This pattern is new, not used or vintage.
