This stunning fleece is from one of our 2016 babies, Loretta. This is her very first fleece, cut when she was about 9 months old. Her fleece is an incredible black, with just the slightest tipping to bay-black. The photos don't do it justice - my camera either washes out the color to a grayish, or can't pick up the depths of the deep black color, but it is just gorgeous! Because this is her cria fleece, it is so soft, fine, and long! Her staple is 4-5", maybe some a bit less, and it is just cloud-soft. I would love to spin this myself, I just don't have the time! Here’s what one customer has to say: “First off one lock of her fluff gives so much yardage! Easy spin on the go as these alpacas are not dusty as most others I've spun . Then I carded very carefully. I made sure the fiber was straight & in lock form on the cards. 4-5 swipes & I get BUTTER! I spun into the night! I have spun many fibers in the 6 years I've been spinning. The fiber Amy Rae produces for the hand spinner is outstanding! I highly recommend this fiber! Especially for someone that is learning the Russian spindle! Amy's alpacas are perfect for traditional support spinning!”
Loretta, like most of our pacas, does like to roll in the grass, so there is definitely some VM in this fleece. Overall, though, we have very clean animals. Our shearer has commented that he's never sheared such clean fleeces, and can often cut all 12 on one blade rather than changing after 3-5 animals like most farms. We move our animals almost every day for all but the coldest part of the year, so they are always on grassy, healthy pasture. This means they don't have nearly the access to mud and dirt that most barn-kept alpacas do, so while there are some hay and pine needle VM, there's very little actual dirt. I personally never wash my alpaca fleece until I actually have yarn!
If you'd like a sample of Loretta's fleece, just send me a message and I'll send you a little. For that matter, I can send samples of anyone you see listed, and I usually have a number of fleeces I’ve not gotten a chance to list on here so just ask, if I’m sending a sample I might as well send several :)
My pricing gives a 10% discount going from an ounce to a full pound, a 15% discount going to a full skirted fleece, and a 30% discount by buying a full unskirted fleece.
