Item details

The famous quote from Margaret Atwood's masterpiece, The Handmaid's Tale: don't let the bastards grind you down!

"Nolite te bastardes carborundorum"

This pattern features two fonts - you will receive both variations with this listing.

This will produce a stitched piece approximately 6" x 6" on 14 count Aida* and is designed to fit inside a 6" hoop. You will need 6** different thread colours: we have recommended some DMC thread colours in the pattern, but you can use whichever colours you prefer.

To buy this piece ready made, see here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/563868456/nolite-te-bastardes-carborundorum-cross
To buy it as a kit, see here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/580069935/cross-stitch-kit-nolite-te-bastardes
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please note, this is an instant download PDF pattern, NOT a finished item!

You will receive five A4 PDF files:
• A preview of the finished pattern
• 2 PDF patterns with colour symbols (with thread colour key)
• 2 PDF patterns with black and white symbols (with thread colour key) and no backstitching

NOTE: As Etsy only allows five files per listing, there are some variations not included (e.g. black and white symbols with backstitching, pattern spread over multiple pages, etc). If you'd like your pattern in a different format, please just ask!

Stitches required:
• Full crosses
• Half crosses
• Backstitching

You will need:
• Fabric (we recommend white 14 count Aida cloth)
• Embroidery thread / floss (pattern lists DMC brand colour codes but you can use any type)
• Embroidery needle
• Scissors / thread snippers

*Sizing:
• 14 count: 6" x 6"
• 18 count: 4.7" x 4.7"
• 20 count: 4.2" x 4.2"
• 28 count: 3" x 3"

** Pattern lists the main colours as pink. The pattern is shown in the listing photos with other main colours for illustrative purposes only. If you would like the DMC thread codes for these colours, please just ask!

FAQs

Each pattern comes as multiple PDF files. You'll receive a selection including colour / black and white, backstitching only (if applicable) and often different sized symbols for easier viewing. A sample pattern is shown in the listing but this is just a section to give you an idea of what your pattern will look like, and may not reflect the same design you are actually purchasing. If you wish to see a sample of the actual chart, just ask. Some patterns will have two designs in one, in which case you will receive a selection of PDF charts. This is because Etsy only allows five files per listing. If you require a different variation, just ask.

If you're struggling to work from the patterns you've received with your order, please do get in touch and I'd be happy to send it to you in a different form. Each pattern can be rendered in several different ways (e.g. different sizes, symbols, colours, with or without backstitching), so we're sure to find something that's easy on your eyes.

To view PDF files you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded free here: https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

First choose the file you wish to print. For black and white printers, and for simplicity, I recommend printing the 'symbols' file (rather than the 'symbols on colour'), but if you have a colour printer or just prefer the second file, it's there! These patterns are designed to be printed on standard A4 paper, so just opening the file and clicking 'print' is all you need to do! Please get in touch for US Letter patterns as I don't produce these as standard so they're made to order.

I've tried to ensure a good balance between the size of the symbols and the number of pages to be printed so paper isn't wasted. That said, if you do find the symbols too small to work with, just get in touch and I'll gladly enlarge the pattern for you so it's easier to work with. This way it will print over more pages, and each symbol will be larger.

This was my first PDF and second attempt at cross stitch. The instructions were pretty easy to follow, and were forgiving of mistakes in the flowers. I enjoyed this pattern, and have been asked for one by a friend upon seeing the finished product.
