A set of six handmade watercolors using genuine Mayan pigments. This set is named for El Castillo, the spectacular Mayan pyramid at Chichen Itza in Mexico. Mayan pigments are created in the tradition of the Mayans, by combining organic dyes with diatomaceous earth, resulting in bright, jewel-toned colors that are also non-toxic. For years, scientists have marveled at the incredible lightfastness of the blue found in Mayan wall paintings and on pottery. Most natural pigments fade over time. Made from extracts of the indigo plant combined with a clay mineral and possibly copal resin (somewhat similar to gum arabic which is part of the binder in watercolor paint), this mixture turned out to be extremely lightfast and durable.
This set is available in half pans and full pans. The colors included in this particular set are: Mayan red Mayan yellow Mayan green Mayan Royal blue Mayan indigo Mayan violet
The half pan set comes in a small, 2” x 1.5” x .75” new tin. The tin has a hinged lid, which makes for a nice mixing surface. The tin closes easily and securely, making this tiny tin great for travel or as another special collection of paints for your studio. The full pan set comes in a larger, 3.75" x 2" x.75" tin. Each of the six pans has a tiny magnet on the bottom so the pans can be rearranged as the artist prefers.
Ruby Mountain Paint Company specializes in micobatch, artisanal watercolors using pigments sourced from around the world. Our paints are always non-toxic, lovingly hand poured into whole pans, half pans, or bottle caps. These are not commercially made paints squeezed into pans, but carefully made high quality watercolors for all types of artists. Each color is made from pure, artist-grade pigments and our own all natural binder formula, which includes gum arabic, local honey, and a time-honored, clove oil preservative. Each pigment is mulled by hand until it is the proper, luscious consistency. Each pan is poured once, slowly cured, then topped off so that the pans are as full as possible.
