This is a valuable piece of maw sit sit gemstone carved in Thailand depicting a mythical winged horse. "A Chollima (also Qianlima, Senrima, or Cheollima, literally "thousand-mile horse") is a mythical winged horse that originates from the Chinese classics and is commonly portrayed in East Asian cultures. This winged horse is said to be too swift and elegant to be mounted (by any mortal man)." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chollima
This is a natural gemstone with flowing veins of deep emerald green and black colors mined in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain. It measures close to 2 inches in diameter and weighs 10 grams. The beauty of this piece is in its front and back double sided design which makes it more intricate and special.
I have come to know about the existence of a gem stone called MAW-SIT-SIT through a very nice lady I met in Bangkok. She showed me her collection of Maw-sit-sit pendants carvings and beads. Fascinated by its color and its name. I started reading about it. Where is it mined, how does it get its name, and what is its composition and visual characteristics.
Here are some of the more enlightening non-technical information I gathered:
Maw-sit-sit is a recent find, first identified in 1963 by the late Swiss gemologist Dr. Edward Gubelin. It was named by the local people after the village where it is mined. This village sits in the Himalayan foothills near the well-known Kansi and Namshawa where the most precious emerald green imperial jadeite were mined. Mawsitsit is found only in this single site.
Maw Sit Sit receives its superb green color from Chromium and black swirls from Ureyite. This combination creates specimens with flowing veins of green and black. The dramatic contrast of bright green and black is unique in the gem world. Many assumed that maw sit sit was just a variety of the jade until gemologist Eduard Gubelin studied the stones and determined that they are, in fact, two separate gemstones.
Maw Sit Sit is an attractive and durable gemstone. It can take an excellent polish and can be fashioned as cabochons, beads, bangles, or used for carvings.
