Thicket/ Rustic Canadian Sheep's Wool Blend in Rust Red

Rust red is a rich colour that suits the rustic nature of Thicket yarn so well. Add a little colour to your winter wardrobe!

The Yarn
This wool blend is sourced from 100% Canadian raised sheep. Soft and squishy, airy and bouncy, it's great for outerwear, and has beautiful definition when cabled. Ooh or make a pair of the coziest thrummed mitts. Or a giant cabled circle scarf. So many possibilities.

Specs

The Dyes Madder Root and Walnut
Madder root produces a gorgeous array of reds, oranges, corals and pinks on natural fibres. One of the oldest sources of red dye, and native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, madder was once widely cultivated to make the coveted colour red.

The green outer husks of Walnuts are a strong and substantive natural dye. Along with soot, they used to be used in making ink. In naturally dyeing, they can yield anywhere from pale taupe and pink to dark chocolate and black.

A Note of Natural Dyes
Natural dyes are sources of colour derived from plants, minerals, and in some cases insects. Not only is natural dyeing a fascinating and magical experience, but it the process can have a lesser impact on the environment than dyeing with synthetic dyes, many of which contain petroleum derivatives. All skeins of Westlake yarn are dyed with natural dyes, some foraged, some grown in my backyard garden, some grown for me by local farmers, and some purchased as ground powder.

I use several methods in my dyeing process to ensure the yarn is colourfast (will not fade with washing or exposure to light), including using mordants, and carefully selecting my dye plants. That said, the colour may change slightly over the years. I see this as part of the evolution of an heirloom quality product that is ultimately biodegradable.

As with all hand dyed yarns, there will be variation in colour and variegation between skeins, especially for the hand painted colours. If your project requires more than one skein, I would recommend knitting them both at the same time, alternating one row of each, to make sure the colours are distributed more evenly.

Other Notes
Each Westlake Fibres yarn is hand dyed with care in a smoke- free environment.

Please note that colours may appear different on different monitors. I've made every attempt to photograph the colours accurately, however they may be a slightly different shade than your monitor shows.

All items are shipped from Canada by Regular Air Mail. This is the most economical shipping option, so it does not include tracking. If you would like to upgrade your shipping to Express Mail (tracking and insurance included), please send me a message and I'd be happy to set that up for you.

I am the only knitter behind Westlake, so please allow 5 days for me to knit, package and mail out your handmade goods. Thanks in advance for your patience!

In order to ensure that your Westlake piece reaches you safe and sound, each smaller hand knit item comes swathed in a bubble envelope. Larger orders will arrive in sturdy poly-mailers.

I package and ship items through Canada Post's regular air mail service, which means that, once mailed, your Westlake item should reach your door in:

- 2 to 9 business days (within Canada)

- 6 to 21 business days (international)

PLEASE NOTE: Holiday shipping deadlines for regular air mail are as follows:
Within Canada Dec 11
US Dec 4
Worldwide Nov 27

This is the most economical shipping option, and so it unfortunately does not come with a tracking number or delivery guarantee. If your item hasn't arrived within the above timeline, please get in touch.

If you would like your package sent Express (comes with a tracking number and delivery guarantee), please get in touch and I would be happy to send you alternate shipping rates.

Please note that International and US parcels may be subject to customs fees at the border, depending on the country you're in, the value of the item and, well, luck (the process seems to be random). Unfortunately, this is out of my control, and I cannot be responsible for paying the fees. You can find out specific fees and duty free thresholds from your local postal service.

If you live in Toronto as well, feel free to contact me about pick-up options.
