An amazing length of vintage Hmong Hilltribe fabric. I picked this up on a recent trip to Vietnam where I was lucky enough to visit the town of Sapa in Northern Vietnam where a lot of the Hilltribes live. This has been produced with traditional hand woven and hand dyed methods using natural indigo dye. It has a beautiful intricate traditional repeat geometric pattern which has been hand embroidered with bright pink and purple thread. The embroidery also has white and red ribbon inlaid within it. Traditionally, every Hilltribe household would produce its own textiles with girls learning to embroider, appliqué, indigo dye, and batik at a young age. Today a large amount of the Hmong fabrics are still hand woven and hand dyed and the traditional dress is still worn by many women.
This piece would have most likely come off a traditional full Hmong skirt as it still has the pleats in the fabric. I think it would have been worn by a member of the Flower Hmong Hilltribe? But Im not 100% sure.
The fabric is a mid-heavy weight linen cotton or hemp and with the detailed amount of embroidery on it it is quite heavy. In amazing vintage condition...the embroidery is still strong with only a few loose threads, but it does have quite a lot of worn marks and dark stains especially on the reverse and would certainly benefit from a cold hand wash before using. The selvedge edges also have loose stitches on them where it has been removed from the skirt.
Measurements; Width 28cm (11") Length 190cm (75") I just love this fabric...the embroidery is amazing and the indigo is lovely...and would look great used either for clothing or for upholstery.
