An amazing piece of vintage Hmong Hilltribe fabric. I picked this up on a recent trip to Thailand where I was lucky enough to visit Chiang Mai in the north where a lot of the Hilltribes come to trade. I believe this remnant was worn as an apron or front panel as part of the Hmong Hilltribe dress. It has been produced by a skilled Hmong artisan using traditional techniques featuring beautifully intricate hand embroidered designs of classic bird and geometric symbols in bright thread. The embroidery is bordered by a mix of metallic trims and it has tassels made of wool and glass beads hanging at the bottom. The reverse is lined with a pretty floral corduroy fabric.
Traditionally, young girls are taught to sew and embroider by their elders, with an emphasis on bright colours and intricate embroidered designs to catch the eye. Girls with impressive embroidery skills are admired for their potential ability to sew beautiful clothes for their future husband and family members.
In used vintage condition...It has a slight worn appearance and minor imperfections and as you can see quite a few of the tassels are missing but is otherwise in fantastic shape for it's age, still bright and full of charm.
Measurements; Width 25cm (10") Length not including tassels 52cm (20.5") Tassel length 14cm (5.5") I just love this remnant ...a beautifully crafted item, the embroidery is amazing and the colours are so vibrant... a perfect piece to use for craft or sewing projects or the frame and enjoy as is.
