Raw, unwashed Shetland fleece. Approx wt 3-4 pounds. This soft, yet strong and durable wool is a delight to spin and is ideal for knitting. Shetland wool is a joy to handspinners with the ease which the fibres can be drawn from the lock when spinning. This combines with the remarkably soft "handle" or feel of good Shetland fleece to make it very popular with handspinners across North America. The wool produced by the Shetland has historically been a valuable commodity. Shetlands produce numerous shades of wool colors, and this variety was commercially important to the wool industry of the Shetland Isles, where natural wools are often used undyed. Tweed is also produced from the coarser Shetland wool, but the Isles are best known for their multicoloured knitwear (made using Fair Isle knitting) and for the traditional knitted lace shawls which are so fine, they will pass through a wedding ring. Fleeces usually weigh between 2 and 4 lb.
