This is a high quality vintage chisel that I have hand carved an octagonal handle for. The handle is made from maple burl to insure that the handle will not crack even after decades of use, if properly cared for and oiled annually.
I have sharpened the blade myself to be razor-sharp by hand on whetstones, I only recommend mild further honing. I do not use any power tools when restoring these fine tools to insure that the most care is taken, and that the heat treatment in the blades I restore will not be drawn out.
I don't use sand paper when I make these handles and they are all one of a kind. I used only cutting tools to form this handle because the severed grains of a hand cut handle will pop like nothing else. For most of the shaping I use a traditional blacksmith made Japanese saw, a draw knife, and a spokeshave from the 1800's.
The handle was hand finished with a natural grape seed oil finish. It may also contain natural walnut oil. It should be oiled annually.
It is impossible to know exactly when this chisel was made, but I took a guess of the 1960's.
