At different times of the year, plants give different colours. So although this Shetland tops has been dyed with the same nettles, and the same quantities, and has been mordanted with Alum like my last batch, it has come out a slightly different colour.
This is a sagey-brown green, but definitely in the green range, and would make a valuable addition to a truly authentic Shetland hand knit project.
A centuray ago when dye was always from plants, Shetland and Norwegian knitting would have a different look than our projects do now, because all their yarn was hand spun, and dyed with plants. There was a softer appearance over all.
If you want to try and recreat that, try spinning your own, dyed from plants. this Shetland tops if fairly fine, and has a nice handle to it.
I only dye in small batches, so this is all I have from this dye batch and although I know I said my last lot was my last lot this year! ...couldn't resist one more go, but I really do think this is the last till next Spring!!
