A lovely stripy baby's beanie hat with pompom ears. PDF knitting pattern available for instant download. To fit ages 0-6m; 6-12m and 12-24m. Ideal new baby gift.
This pattern is for circular needles, and includes hints and tips on how to avoid a jog in the stripes.
If you haven't used circular needles before, fear not, it's not hard once you've cracked your first row. As a starting point, if you cast on with straight needles (using your usual cast on technique), knit the first row with the circular needle, straighten up all your stitches, then start knitting on the round. It's a lot easier than you'd think, AND no sewing up the back! Once you start, you'll be off, and if you get stuck, get in touch! We're always here to lend a helping hand.
We've used DROPS Nepal to knit these hats. It's an Aran weight yarn, made from Alpaca and Wool. It's very soft, and knits up beautifully. Its downside is that it's handwash, but because of the natural properties, it repels damp and dirt (unless you tip a drink on it!), so shouldn't need much laundering. That said, if you want to use an alternative yarn, you'll still have a beautiful hat, just check the comparible tension when choosing.
To make the hat you will need:
1 x 50g balls in 3 colours*. Pair each 4.5mm and 5mm circular needles (max cable length 40cms). 35mm pompom maker or cardboard rings.
*The pattern uses less than 50g of each colour, so if you have a bag of bits, you'll only need about 25g fof each colour.
Ready for instant download, a very enjoyable and quick little pattern to knit.
