Item details

Made by Sheffield-based silversmith David Scott-Walker in 1984, this is a beautiful, boldly hallmarked Sterling thimble set with a very nicely banded piece of scarce Blue John semi-precious mineral, found only in the caves at Castleton in Derbyshire, England.

What is Blue John? The name derives from the French bleu-jaune, meaning 'blue-yellow'. Legend insists that Blue John, one of the world's rarest minerals, was first mined in the Derbyshire village of Castleton during Roman times. The fourteen known varieties of this beautiful blue, purple, yellow and white banded fluorospar are cut and polished by skilled craftsmen for unique jewellery and ornaments. Notable examples can be seen at Chatsworth House and London's Geological Museum.

The tall thimble is also decorated randomly around its 'girth' with bold full English Hallmarks for the city of Sheffield, 'DSW', Sterling Silver and year 'K' for 1984.

Condition: There are tiny scratches, merely comprising general 'age patina' over the silver. I have not cleaned it. The Blue John stone section is well set - and are remarkably free from damage given its age. There are two tiny flea bit chip slivers around the outside rim of the Blue John, but they're only visible under magnification (see photos 2 & 3). To the naked eye it looks perfect, and you cant 'feel' any damage with your finger. They may even have been there from day one.

Dimensions: The thimble is ~7/8ths inch (2.1cm) high with a diameter (at the base) of just over ~5/8ths inch (1.8cm) wide. It weighs 11.8 grams. It fits my medium sized ladies fingers well.

Overall, a hard to find beautiful solid silver thimble set with an attractive rare mineral - lovely to use or to collect.
