Tsumugi: Is a silk fabric woven from the floss remaining in the silkworm cocoon after the full threads have been removed. By spinning these broken strands together silkworm farmers created a fabric for their own use. Today tsumugi is highly prized and one of the most expensive kimono fabrics despite its humble origins. Initially tsumugi fabric is very stiff, due to the starch applied during spinning, but the more times it is worn and washed, the softer it becomes.
Tatewaku: A design featuring tatewaku ; a pattern drawn with two curved lines, signifying the natural phenomenon of something emerging, or welling up from steam/heat/air. Hourglass effect, undulating lines, rippling shape, gently swelling and rolling, all can describe this pattern. It dates back to Heian period (794 to 1185).
