A note about the use and care of low-fire ceramic ware. I am primarily a hand-builder or sculptor. I use sturdy, reliable clays suited to hand-built pieces of a variety of thicknesses. Most of my work is decorative, although I occasionally enjoy the application of my ideas on functional wares. Low-fire ceramic clay is more porous, but is fully utilitarian and will last as long as high-fired ware when handled with proper care.

Although I run my pieces through the dishwasher often, hand-washing is recommended to extend the life of the ware. The same goes for the microwave: to avoid thermal shock, it is better to heat foods in a separate container and transfer before serving. Particularly with tiny prep-bowls, the microwave can over-heat foods quickly and unevenly and stress the pot.

With a bit of extra care low-fire ceramic ware is fully serviceable and will last a lifetime.
