A shy North American woodland perennial, the Jack in the Pulpit bloom is almost as elusive as the fae that are fabled to sleep within it. Intriguing blooms of green streaked with brown to purple at the base grow among the lily type leaves at or near the same height so that only the most keen of eye will be able to spot them. Alas, later in the season they become a good bit more apparent as the blooms give way to bright red berries.

Cold stratify seeds for 4-6 weeks by placing seeds in a damp paper towel, loosely folded, and placed in a zip bag, in the refrigerator. Sow stratified seeds 1.5 cm deep in moist compost and place pots in a cool area in indirect light. Germination should occur in 20-40 days but can be sporadic. Keep pots well watered and out of direct sun or excessive heat. Once seedlings can be safely handled they seedlings can be transplanted to pots or a prepared shady flower bed.
