Item details

*This is a miniature specimen—please read dimensions and examine scale photos carefully!

This unique specimen is known as Boulder opal--it features veins of Australian opal growing through an ironstone matrix. The specimen is a small, thin slice with an unusual freeform shape. The pale blue, lightly opalescent opal is a perfect contrast to the brown matrix rock. In this specimen, the opal has grown in the form of a single vein with an appealing crackling pattern. The vibrant colors of the opal are more visible when dipped in water—color flashes include pale blue and electric green. This is a miniature, freeform shaped but only semipolished specimen and would make a wonderful addition to any display or jewelry supply collection.

Locality: Queensland, Australia.
Dimensions: 1.00” x 0.38” x 0.25” (26mm x 10mm x 7mm)
Weight: 1.8 g (0.07 oz, 9.2 cts)

Australian opals are some of the most valuable opals in the world--they are highly valued for their variety of base colors and beautiful flashes of opalescence. Boulder opals grow as veins in cracks and fissures in large ironstone boulders. They are left in the matrix in which they grew to improve durability, decrease crazing (hairline cracking) of the opal, and improve presentation. Raw specimens are difficult to find.

Durability: Hardness--6.5. Opals are prone to dryness and cracking, known as crazing, so care must be taken in wearing and setting. Avoid rapid temperature changes. (Opal specimens are raw and unsealed--they may exhibit existing crazing lines.) Rubbing an opal with your finger will actually help lock in moisture--hence, the opal's old name of "Loving Stone".

Healing: Opal is believed to strongly enhance psychic abilities, helping us perceive all sides of a situation. It has long been considered a stone of dreams, especially to the Aboriginee culture of Australia--in this culture, opal is seen a stone of dreamtime. It is believed to enhance self-expression, transmute negative into positive energy, and carry the energy of joy into the wearer's life!
