This is a standard black iron pipe cross fitting finished with a matt black powder coating.
Cross fittings or sometimes called X’s get their name from the resemblance of the letter X. Much like a tee fitting, these fittings are used to “tap” into or out of an existing line of black iron piping offering no less and no more than two changes in direction that are colinear to themselves and perpendicular to the original direction.
Standard crosses have 4 connections. Two of those connections are referred to as “inline” and the others being referred to as the “outlets”. The two “inline” connections are colinear to each other and perpendicular to the “outlet” connections which are themselves colinear. All connections in a standard cross are female and of the same size.
Crosses make great supports for larger furniture designs such as chair and table frames.
Black iron pipe is typically used to transport non-corrosive fluids such as water or gas underground, though your home, in businesses. - Commonly, they are found at your big box hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, Ace, etc.
Unlike the ones you will get at your local supplier, these fittings are finished using a process called powder coating that gives them a flawless painted look that can take some serious abuse! That means these fittings are meant to be used in furniture builds such as shelving, tables, benches, chairs, or decor.
Powder coating is a process of depositing a thin layer of plastic over a metal surface using electrostatic adhesion. After the plastic powder has been deposited each fitting is then baked at a temperature over 400 degrees for up to 30 minutes fusing the plastic powder together and melting to the surface of the fitting. This process results in a hard finish that is very tough to scratch, chip, or rust.
I currently offer only 1 color of powder coating; matte black. This is constrained because of mass production. I do have the ability to provide custom colors for an additional price. In the future, I hope to offer more color options such as copper, brass, and white.
Each fitting is available in 3 sizes: [ 3/4" ] [ 1" ] [ 1 - 1/2" ]
My stock may fluctuate rapidly since these are newer listings so if you are interested in placing a larger order I would suggest starting a conversation first to inquire about fulfillment!
