Item details

A free form or designer cabochon of purple Imori Stone, also known as Victoria Stone. If you searched specifically for this rock by name chances are you know the story: Dr. Imori, a Japanese chemist, made this stone in the 1970s and 1980s in his laboratory. His recipe to create this material - ingredients and process - was never properly documented, so when he passed away the secret was lost. A number of attempts have been made to recreate it, but nothing comparable has been achieved yet. Starburst Stone is a more recent attempt, but doesn't quite match up to Dr. Imori's inspiration.

I'm not usually one to cut man made stones, but I make an exception with Imori Stone. The bright chatoyant blades always make finished cabochons stand out.

This is an example of "Reddish-Purple" Imori Stone (was manufactured in 15 different colors). I don't see a lot of this color available. This one is a nice translucent purple and has chatoyant blades radiating from one side. It does have some air bubbles, which can occur in this material. I don't believe the bubbles distract much from the stone.

It measures 43 mm x 35 mm and is 5 mm thick. It has an even bezel of 1.5 mm to help with setting in a custom piece of jewellery. It has been sanded clean on the back.

I notice this material is priced very high. I've had this rough around for a while so I'm going to price it more affordably.

FAQs

It is considered standard practice to seal certain vugs or small pits that may appear in a cabochon with clear epoxy. This ensures a smooth, consistent surface when the stone is polished. I will only mention this in a listing if considerable work was done to seal imperfections.

Some stones simply do not photograph all that well. If there is a considerable difference, I will point it out in the listing. Also remember we're all viewing the photos from different monitors with potentially different settings, so some variation may be present.

Yes, I will combine shipping for multiple items where appropriate. In these cases I will refund the difference on the shipping after I have mailed out the items.

I will only list cabochons if they meet my standards: even domes and bezels, no visible flat spots or scratches, and high polish. I want you to be happy with the stones, and take pride in the piece of custom jewellery you set them in.

Some of the items in my shop are handmade by me, and others are vintage stones cut many years ago which I have accumulated in my collection. I state the status of each item in the listing.
