This is a one off for me as the fixings are expensive, but I wanted to try out a different woodturning kit and this is the end result which I consider rather handsome.
I have turned the handle from Boxwood which has a warm creamy to yellow colour. It has a very fine grain and this particular piece shows some defined age lines. The black lines are burned in for added visual interest, plus I like the smell of burning wood :o) The fixings are manufactured from brass and steel.
Approximate dimensions: total length 19.5cm with the turned handle being 5.5cm long and 3.5cm across its widest part. The length of the pointy part is 11cm.
I am familiar with awls, but a scratch awl is new to me. A search for more information says: "A scratch awl is a woodworking layout and point-making tool. It is used to scribe a line to be followed by a hand saw or chisel when making woodworking joints and other operations. The scratch awl is basically a steel spike with its tip sharpened to a fine point", but then you probably know all that. It may be useful in various crafts such as leather or metal work, but the length of it may preclude that use.
This would make a lovely gift for the handyman in your life. The length of the pointy section (can you tell I am not familiar with tool component parts) would allow holes to be married up through, say, 4in thick fence posts. Being a brand new tool, please be aware that it is EXTREMELY SHARP! There will be a plastic tube fitted over the point end to help prevent stabbing yourself, but please be careful when removing it.
It will arrive in a giftbox also handmade by me.
The pound coin is for scale purposes and not included in this sale.
