This listing is for this 5" x 60" Vintage Indian Kantha Quilt Remnant in Orange, Pea Green, Rose, Forest Green.
You will receive the exact remnant pictured. On side one, you see the main color selection, and if you flip the remnant over, you'll find the colors/prints you'll have on the flip side! You will see the two different fabrics, depicting the different sides of the remnant.
These remnants are wonderful for any of your artsy fartsy creations! Use them in mixed media, collage, embellishment, boro, for bags and pouches! Piece together remnants for table runners, pillows, use for prayer flags (see those I've listed in my shop), wall art (I've used some bits of these fabrics in finished pieces I've listed) or anywhere your heart desires! You can embellish that worn torn pair of jeans with bits of these remnants and give them new life as a piece of wearable art! Perhaps create an entire new wearable from various remnants. I'm presently working on a few modular/kimono style coats made from a mix of quilt remnants.
The vintage Kantha quilts these pieces were cut from from are created using multiple pieces of very worn and aged saris that have been mended and patched over many years of use. The quilts are then pieced together using various scraps of fabrics as batting (sometimes as many as 3-6 layers of scrap filling causing different thicknesses within a quilt).
Typically the “batting” is layers of additional saris, but you might also discover a piece of denim used in a layer, an intricate piece of embroidery, an old shirt with buttons still attached, or the occasional zipper (I have found one).
Pull apart the layers and find hidden treasures of more great fabrics to add to your creative projects! These pieces will be more gauzy...and light weight.
The quilts are subjected to many years of wear and tear, including fading and stains, many having patches…all adding to their vintage charm.
Let your imagination run wild with all of the beautiful colors and patterns in these wonderful quilt squares…and enjoy using them in your own unique creative way!
They mix very well with my hand dyed fabrics and silks. I will also be listing more 12 x 12 and 6x6 Kantha squares this week., as well as more scrap packs.
I teach a number of workshops using these quilts, including my "Whimsical Banners and Prayer Flags", "Kantha Quilt Vest", and "Blizzards Kantha Snowmen" . See one of my snow guys above!
Also..you can see a couple of table runners I've made with these remnants.I simply decide on a width, cut and lay one remnant piece overlapping the next by about 1" and top stitch...then adding another till I have the overall length I want.
You can further embellish the machine stitched lines with some decorative hand stitching....even a running stitch or feather stitch.
Alternately, you can simply hand stitch (running stitch) the layers together using button thread, quilting thread or embroidery floss.
One image shows where I've bound (hand stitched) some of my hand dyed cotton ribbon to make a quilt binding, but the other is just left edges raw. (because I got sidetracked and never finished it!) I've washed them both a number of times...and only snipped a few stray threads. Either way...they make quick and easy and really unique runners of any size...great for handmade gifts!! :)
Use your imagination and let the fun begin!
