Vintage postage stamps add a beautiful and personal touch to any modern letter or card.

About this stamp:
This stamp celebrates the 150th anniversary of Joseph Pulitzer’s birth. Pulitzer (1847-1911) was a Hungarian immigrant who became one of the most influential newspaper publishers in history. Although his initial success was achieved through sensationalism, with his paper the New York World, he established high journalistic standards for his newspapers. He founded the Columbia School of Journalism and the Pulitzer Prizes for achievement in journalism, literature, music, and art. The stamp features a portrait of Pulitzer and an important message, “Our Republic and Its Press Will Rise or Fall Together.”

Usage ideas:
This vintage stamp carries a timeless message. Use it to show your support for a free press.

Vintage stamps are suitable as postage for any modern correspondence – just be sure you include enough postage to add up the current postal rate.

FAQs

Yes! As long as they haven’t already been cancelled, vintage stamps are just as good as “modern” stamps (and, in many cases, they’re a whole lot prettier, too!). Just be sure you use enough vintage stamps to equal current postal rates.

As of January, 2018, U.S. postal rates are: - Standard 1 ounce rectangular letter or card: 50 cents - Square or oversized (non-machinable) 1 ounce letter or card: 71 cents - Postcard: 35 cents - International: $1.15 If your letter or card weighs more than 1 ounce, or is a non-standard shape or size, check www.usps.com or your local post office to determine how much postage you’ll need.

Officially, no. According to the U.S. Postal Service, all letters and cards are now machine-cancelled. However, postal cancelling machines sometimes miss stamps. If this happens, postal carriers may “cancel” your stamps with a pen or marker, leaving your stamps much less beautiful than you’d intended. The only sure way to avoid this is to have your envelopes hand-cancelled at your local post office. Some post offices and postal workers are nicer about this than others. My advice: ask nicely and try different postal workers if you get a ‘no’ the first time you ask.

I typically buy stamps that are categorized as MNH (mint, non-hinged), meaning they are unused, still have their original undisturbed gum/adhesive, and have no trace of damage done by a stamp hinge (collectors use stamp hinges to affix stamps into collecting books). That said, my stamps are meant to be used and shared, not collected, and I don’t guarantee they’re in perfect, collectible condition.

Yes, yes, yes! I’d love to work with you to create a beautiful set of stamps for your special occasion. See my "Collections / Custom" listing for more information, or convo me to get started.

Vintage stamps would make a lovely gift for a fellow letter writer! If you’d like to send your order as a gift, convo me with the recipient’s name and address and any other useful details. I’m happy to make up a nice gift package that’s sure to bring some joy to their day.
