500 gm of : Forest Green - Turmeric(Curcuma Domestica) and Indigo, Oxalic acid
100 gm of: Alum mordant
Imported from India, this natural plant dye is made from Curcuma domestic (turmeric), Indigo and oxalic acid using a traditional eco-friendly fermentation method and dried into a powdered form. It is very simple to use - instructions are included - but basically the dye is cooked in a pot of hot water for about 30 minutes and once it's cooled down, wool fiber, yarn or fabric is added (unless using superwash wool which won't felt and can be added to hot water) and 'cooked' for a further 30 minutes and allowed to cool.
The dye can be used alone or with a mordant such as alum, tannic acid or iron. This listing includes the most common mordant, aluminum phosphate or alum. Mordanting is a step done before dyeing - alum is dissolved in hot water and then the wool soaked in it, then rinsed and on to the dyeing.
A mordant can help natural dye adhere better to the fiber or can change the shade. Iron, for example, can be added at the end of the dye bath to darken a color. Most natural dyes require a mordant but as stated, this dye can be used without.
The amount of fiber this 500 gms will dye depends on how dark a color you want to achieve. A deep green will require the full amount to dye 500 gms of wool (about 1 lb). For a good medium blue, 500 gms will dye 1 Kg (just over 2 lbs). A light blue will of course dye more.
This dye will only work with wool. It may work on some silks but is not as colorfast. It will definitely not work on cellulose fibers like cotton, linen or hemp. These fibers require a pure indigo dye vat.
