Item details

This is a Medieval or Viking style spindle consisting of a spindle stick made of beech and a removable whorl made of African Blackwood. It's finished with non toxic beeswax polish. There is a small bulb at the top of the shaft to anchor a half hitch. If you prefer a plain tip without the bulb let me know and I can modify it.

I use this style of spindle with the fibre held on a belt distaff as people did in Medieval times.

You can see me spinning this way here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq20eIFWCFA

Once you have built up a cop on the spindle you can remove the whorl because the cop now acts as a whorl. This way you can get more yarn on your spindle before it gets too heavy.

The shaft is 10 3/4" or 27.25 cm long and weighs 14 g or .5 oz. The whorl is 1 1/8" or 3 cm across and weighs 5 g or .2 oz.

Perfect for reenactors.
