Traditionally hand painted batik originated from North Peninsular Malaysia.
[What is Batik?]
Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth. It is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting, or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired.
This cultural-rich piece with detailed leaves and flowers motifs consists of two gorgeously printed areas, Kepala Kain – Head, which is the main, made of 1/5 of the areas, and Badan Kain – Body, which is usually designed in repetitive prints, covering 4/5 of the piece.
This type of cotton fabric is just beautiful as it is to be used as sarong, pareo, loose-fitting skirtlike garment, kebaya, beachwears, leisure - as how it was traditionally used, or with creativities as the elegant pieces suitable for sewing projects, or as simple as hearty yet elegant gift ideas.
